The small town of Carlingford is shocked by the terms of the will read on the demise of old Mrs. Thomson, none more than the lawyer named as the will’s executor, John Brown. One surprise is the wealth of her estate, and the other is that she does not leave anything to her next-of-kin in the town who had been quietly counting on an inheritance.
As the story unfolds of John Brown’s efforts to discharge his duties appropriately, readers are introduced to the town and a few of its leading citizens: the Rector, and the young Dr. Rider in particular. Carlingford was to become the setting for a series of novels that are among Margaret Oliphant’s most successful works. Threads of plots emerging from this novella became the basis for the Chronicles which followed.
William Morris (1834–1896) had significant associations with Oxford. This lecture, by one of Morris’s early biographers, sets his artistic formation and subsequent vision in the context of his social connections, especially those forged in his Oxford years.
